The First Union African Baptist Church was built in 1879 when the 12 acres of land was sold for $82 to freed slaves. From the 1900’s to the 1930’s the church was a place for worship and a schoolhouse for the children. The form of the Holy Bible the churchgoers used was created by the Gullah. In 1884, the church burned down and was later rebuilt in 1885 by the island to continue gathering there for worship. In the 1950’s, residents of Daufuskie left the island for economic prosperity, causing the church to close down. It reopened for services in 1868 and still is a place of worship today. If you vist the church, you will see the bibles and textbooks used by the children as well as hear the version of the Bible the Gullah worshipped. The Church is now a historical landmark on Daufuskie Island.
