Bloody Point

The Yemmassee Tribe launched surprise attacks against European settlers over motivations from the Spanish and unfair trade agreements.

Bloody Point was originally an area claimed by European colonists in the 1600’s. The island of Daufuskie was also home to the Yemmassee Indians and an area of settlement for the Spanish.

The year of 1715 is where Blood Point gets its name. During this time, the Yemmassee Tribe launched attacks against the European settlers. Many historians believe the Yemmassee tribe was encouraged by the Spanish to fight because they desired the land. These small battles were so gruesome that they left behind large amounts of blood all across the area. The Yemmassee Tribe lost most of its members and land, leaving space for the Union Soldiers in the Civil War to occupy.
